Former SEC Chair Jay Clayton said in an interview that he is “speaking as a citizen” on crypto-related matters.
Clayton, who served as SEC chair from 2017 to 2021, led the agency during a period of increased scrutiny of the cryptocurrency industry. Under Clayton, the SEC cracked down on unregistered and fraudulent initial coin offerings (ICOs). The commission also refused to approve the application of any bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and sued Ripple Labs.
In March, Clayton took on an advisory role at hedge fund One River Digital Asset Management, the parent company of the newly launched digital asset fund One River Digital. He was also named non-executive chairman of Apollo Global Management’s board of directors.
“I’m not speaking for the SEC, I’m speaking as a citizen,” Clayton said in the interview. “I’m not providing legal advice, I’m not providing investment advice.”
Clayton said that he believes the crypto industry is “still in its early stages” and that there is “a lot of innovation going on.” He added that he is “optimistic” about the potential of the industry, but cautioned that there are also “risks.”
“I think it’s important for people to understand that there are risks associated with this space,” Clayton said. “There are opportunities, but there are also risks.”
Clayton’s comments come as the cryptocurrency market continues to grow. The total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies is currently around $2.1 trillion, according to CoinMarketCap.
