Kashkari said that he believes blockchain technology, the underlying technology behind cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, has more potential than bitcoin itself.
"I would say the conventional wisdom now is that blockchain, the underlying technology, is probably more interesting and has more potential than maybe bitcoin itself," Kashkari said.
However, Kashkari also expressed some concerns about the potential for digital currencies to be used for illegal activities.
"I think there are some real risks here, too," Kashkari said. "We need to make sure that these digital currencies are regulated in a way that prevents them from being used for illicit activity."
