The agency said in a statement that the man, identified as Carlos Rosario, was using a high-powered antenna to mine bitcoin without a license. The antenna was interfering with communications services in the area.
The FCC warned Rosario that he could face penalties if he continues to operate the bitcoin miner.
"Continued operation of this device that causes harmful interference after your receipt of this warning constitutes a violation of the Federal laws cited above and could subject the operator to severe penalties, including, but not limited to, substantial monetary fines, in rem arrest action to seize the offending radio equipment, and criminal sanctions including imprisonment," the agency said.
Rosario has 20 days to respond to the notice.
