**Facebook has acquired blockchain startup Chainspace, but will not be using any of its technology, a company spokesperson has confirmed.**
**Sources close to the deal told Cheddar that Facebook bought Chainspace by hiring most of the company's team, rather than acquiring its products or services.**
**Chainspace was founded by a team of researchers from University College London, and is focused on solving the scalability problems of blockchain, most notably by integrating sharding and smart contracts.**
**For comparison, the current Bitcoin network can only process around 2-18 transactions per second (TPS), while Visa can process up to 2,000 TPS and PayPal can process 115 TPS.**
**Although many blockchain supporters have praised the security and transparency of blockchain, the technology has not been able to scale to the level of traditional payment methods like Visa or PayPal.**
**Sharding is a scalability solution that divides the network into smaller parts, called shards, each with its own consensus protocol.**
**As a result, a network with integrated sharding can process hundreds of transactions per shard, significantly increasing the scalability of blockchain.**
**This is not the first time that Facebook has been linked to blockchain technology. In December, a report emerged that the company was developing a cryptocurrency for its WhatsApp messaging app, which would be tested first in India.**
