Europol is developing a new “cryptocurrency-tracing serious game” to train law enforcement on how to investigate cryptocurrency-related crimes.
The game, which is being developed in partnership with CEPOL (the European Union’s law enforcement training agency), is scheduled to be launched in October at the Europol-Interpol Cybercrime Conference.
“The game will be the first law enforcement training opportunity on cryptocurrency and investigation using gamification,” Europol said in a statement.
The announcement comes as cryptocurrency-related crime continues to grow in scale and sophistication. In 2021, the total value of cryptocurrency-related crime was estimated to be around $14 billion, according to Chainalysis.
Europol said that the game would help law enforcement officers to “understand the basics of cryptocurrencies, how they are used in criminal activities, and how to trace and investigate cryptocurrency-related crimes.”
The game is also expected to help law enforcement officers to develop their skills in areas such as digital forensics, blockchain analysis, and cryptocurrency trading.
“We are confident that this game will be a valuable tool for law enforcement training and will help us to prevent and investigate cryptocurrency-related crime,” Europol said.
In addition to the game, Europol is also working to develop other tools and resources to help law enforcement combat cryptocurrency-related crime. In February, the agency launched a new Cryptocurrency Investigation Unit, which is dedicated to investigating and disrupting cryptocurrency-related crime.
Europol is also working with other law enforcement agencies and private sector partners to share information and best practices on cryptocurrency-related crime.
“We are committed to working with our partners to tackle this emerging threat and to protect the integrity of the cryptocurrency ecosystem,” Europol said.
