The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has warned that investors in cryptocurrencies face the risk of losing “all their money” due to the largely unregulated market.
In a report published on Tuesday, ESMA said that the recent all-time highs of bitcoin and other crypto assets “highlight the significant risks” associated with the market.
The regulator pointed to the “continued relevance” of its previous warnings about the risks of investing in cryptocurrencies, which include volatility, fraud, and money laundering.
ESMA also said that global stablecoins – cryptocurrencies that are pegged to a fiat currency – remain under regulatory scrutiny, even as there is positive sentiment around central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
The regulator highlighted the large energy consumption of cryptocurrencies, which is a major environmental concern.
“ESMA will continue to monitor developments in the crypto-asset market and will assess the need for further action,” the report said.
