**EU passes landmark crypto law to prevent future Terra-Lunas**
The European Union has passed landmark legislation to regulate the cryptocurrency industry, in a move designed to prevent future Terra-Luna-style collapses.
The Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) law, which has been in the works for nearly two years, requires crypto issuers to provide detailed information about their products and to have sufficient reserves to back them up.
“We don’t want people to blow up the system or just go bust that any recourse, as we’ve seen for example recently with Terra-Luna, which just melted away,” said Stefan Berger, a German lawmaker who led negotiations on the legislation. “MiCA prevents and schemes from coming onto the market.”
The legislation is still subject to final approval by the European Parliament and the European Council, but is expected to come into force in 2023.
It is the latest in a series of moves by regulators around the world to tighten oversight of the crypto industry, which has seen a surge in popularity in recent years.
In South Korea, the collapse of Terra has prompted regulators to speed up efforts to come up with their own comprehensive set of laws for the country’s crypto industries.
