**Arbitrum**, a leading Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution, is set to reduce its gas fees by at least 50% in a new update set to go live on its testnet later this week.
The update, which is scheduled for August 31, will see Arbitrum's base fee reduced from 50 gwei to 25 gwei, according to Offchain Labs, the company behind Arbitrum.
The move is expected to make Arbitrum more competitive with other Layer 2 scaling solutions, such as Polygon and Optimism, which offer lower gas fees than Ethereum's mainnet.
Offchain Labs founder Steven Goldfeder told CoinDesk that the update is the result of a number of optimizations that have been made to Arbitrum's underlying technology.
"We've been working on a number of improvements to Arbitrum's performance, including reducing the size of our state commitments and batching more transactions together," Goldfeder said. "These improvements have allowed us to reduce our base fee without sacrificing security."
The update is currently only live on Arbitrum's testnet, but Goldfeder said that it will be rolled out to Arbitrum's mainnet "in the coming weeks."
Arbitrum is currently Ethereum's largest Layer 2 scaling solution, with nearly $2.5 billion in total value locked (TVL), according to DeFi Llama.
