Ethereum developers are moving forward with plans to transition the network to Proof-of-Stake (PoS), which would remove the need for miners.
On March 11, developer Mikhail Kalinin published specifications for merging the future ETH2 blockchain with the existing Ethereum network. The document notes that the consensus upgrade from Proof-of-Work (PoW) to PoS will be the core change.
The publication of the specifications comes as tensions between Ethereum miners and developers are rising. Miners stand to lose significant revenue when the network transitions to PoS, while Ethereum developers are looking to improve the high fees and congestion on Ethereum.
Last week, Cointelegraph reported that Ethereum's core developers scheduled the implementation of the EIP-1559 improvement proposal for July. The proposal will help to mitigate Ethereum's current high fees by introducing a fee burn mechanism.
Although the proposal is expected to reduce Ethereum's rising fees, EIP-1559 could reduce miners' revenue by up to 50%. In response, some miners have threatened to "go rogue" by redirecting their hash power to a mining pool that will oppose the EIP-1559 upgrade on April 1.
However, core developers appear to be prepared for the backlash from miners. Last month, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said on Chinese social media (reposted by Wu Blockchain) that if miners threaten a 51% attack, "we will all switch to PoS as soon as possible."
The developers have also coupled the EIP-1559 with the difficulty bomb, which is set to go off in July, in order to reduce the likelihood of a hard fork. And as Redditor Always_Question pointed out in a Reddit post arguing for the prioritization of the merge:
"The merge is ready to provide a backup for the community in case a group of miners collude to disable the positive effects of EIP-1559."
Earlier this week, Buterin revealed that ETH2 developers are prioritizing the merge over the deployment of sharding. His comments on Chinese social media suggest that the focus on the merge may be motivated by a desire to minimize the potential impact of miner protest.
"The rebellion of the Ethereum miner will likely force #Ethereum 2.0 to happen even sooner than expected. This is a good thing," said Lark Davis.
Buterin also noted that layer-2 scaling solutions will be released in the coming months. He predicts that Optimism's improvements will enable Ethereum to scale by a factor of 100x. Buterin asserted that layer-2 solutions will be sufficient for Ethereum's needs until sharding is implemented.
