**New York State Assembly passes bill to temporarily ban proof-of-work mining**
A New York State Assembly committee has passed a bill that would temporarily ban proof-of-work (PoW) mining in the state for a period of two years.
The bill, which was introduced by Assemblyman Clyde Vanel, would require all PoW mining operations in the state to cease operations within 90 days of its passage. It would then remain in effect for two years, after which it would automatically expire.
The bill still requires passage by the entire New York State Assembly and the state's Senate, and then would need to be signed into law by the governor.
If passed, the bill would represent a significant setback for the cryptocurrency mining industry in New York State. The state is home to a number of large-scale PoW mining operations, including Greenidge Generation, which operates a 100-megawatt PoW mining facility in Dresden, New York.
Earlier this month, a similar PoW ban narrowly failed to pass in an EU Parliament committee vote.
