**Direxion files for Bitcoin and Ethereum futures ETFs**
Direxion, a provider of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), has filed for Bitcoin and Ethereum futures ETFs with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
If approved, the company plans to launch additional ETFs based on futures contracts for other assets in the future.
Direxion's move comes just a week after six other companies filed for Ethereum futures ETFs, as reported by Tricksmmo. The other companies are: Volatility Shares, BitWise, Roundhill, Vaneck, Proshares and Grayscale.
The SEC is currently considering more than half a dozen applications for Bitcoin spot ETFs, the most prominent of which is from financial giant BlackRock, which has previously had 575/576 ETFs approved by the SEC.
So far, the SEC has not approved any Bitcoin spot ETFs, while allowing the first 2X levered Bitcoin futures ETF in the US to go live. This has drawn criticism from Grayscale's legal team, who argue that leveraged products are inherently riskier.
In fact, the SEC has approved several Bitcoin futures ETFs in the past, including Proshares, Valkyrie and Vaneck, all of which launched at the end of 2021. Therefore, some observers predict that a Bitcoin spot ETF is likely to come first or at least be reviewed more favorably by the SEC.
However, the SEC's view is that the derivative market has enough safeguards in place, whereas spot Bitcoin trading activities are rife with fraud and manipulation risks.
