The Department of Veterans Affairs is looking to the blockchain industry to help solve interoperability and data sharing problems.
“We really would be looking to industry to surface use cases for us,” said Dr. David Worthington, the VA’s chief medical informatics officer. “I think we’re going to be coming to industry with problems we have, and if you think blockchain is an appropriation, bring it to us.”
The VA is facing a number of challenges with interoperability and data sharing, Worthington explained. For example, the department has a hard time sharing patient data with other healthcare providers, and it has difficulty integrating its electronic health records with other systems.
Worthington believes that blockchain could help solve these problems. He said that blockchain could provide a secure and decentralized way to share patient data, and it could also help to integrate the VA’s electronic health records with other systems.
“We’re really looking to industry for the best ideas, and trying to be nimble enough to take advantage of those as the market evolves,” Worthington said.
Worthington is particularly interested in how blockchain can be used to solve problems that the VA hasn’t even thought of yet. He sees the development of solutions to these new problems as a “missing middle” between blockchain technology today and its use in health record interoperability.
