The team announced on Thursday that it would allow fans to purchase merchandise using DOGE through Bitpay.

Dallas Mavericks has accepted Bitcoin (BTC) payments through Bitpay for the past two years. However, the team is only the second NBA franchise to accept cryptocurrency, after the Sacramento Kings.
In addition to DOGE and BTC, Mavericks fans can also purchase merchandise using Bitcoin Cash (BCH), USDC, GUSD, Pax and Busd.
Bitpay CEO Stephen Pair said the NBA franchise was helping to pave the way for cryptocurrency adoption.
“Bitpay believes that cryptocurrency will become more widely adopted as this industry continues to change the way people think about and use money, and as it challenges traditional payment methods,” Pair said.
Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, shared his thoughts on the decision to integrate DOGE.
“It’s valuable, so why not? Our payment gateway supports it. We will continue to HODL. It’s a fun PR stunt and it’s fun to do.”
Cuban has previously warned analyst Peter Schiff that gold would remain a store of value, but that Bitcoin was the tool that would allow people to become their own banks.
Dogecoin has seen a surge in popularity this year, even surpassing Bitcoin in terms of mentions on Twitter. Billionaire Elon Musk has been a vocal supporter of the cryptocurrency, and has even joked about taking it over.
