During his seven years at Apple, Shoemaker served as a senior director for the App Store evaluation team, where he grew the team from four to over 300 members.
Since leaving the “technology giant,” Shoemaker has spent the past few years mentoring blockchain startups.
“Identity is still a missing piece in our digital world and blockchain technology has the ability to completely revolutionize how we prove and verify identity,” Shoemaker said in a statement.
“Creating a reliable open source identity ecosystem where people can contribute or participate is an important part of helping digital identity reach a wider audience and become more useful in the modern world.”
Civic acquired the Identity.com domain name in July of this year from Inflection. While the purchase price was not disclosed, Civic founder and CEO Vinny Lingham said at the time, “It was a lucrative opportunity and we were very lucky.”
The company raised $33 million during its ICO offering last year as part of an effort to build decentralized infrastructure that allows third parties to verify personal authentication.
