Former Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutor Samuel Buell is joining Latham & Watkins as a partner in the firm's New York office, Bloomberg Law reported Tuesday.
Buell, who served as the DOJ's acting general counsel for the Criminal Division from 2018 to 2019, is expected to focus on cryptocurrency and other emerging technologies, the report said.
Buell's hire comes as the DOJ and other government agencies have increased their focus on cryptocurrency-related enforcement. In March, the DOJ announced the formation of a new Crypto Enforcement Unit, which will be led by Buell's former colleague, Eun Young Choi.
Buell is a graduate of Harvard Law School and clerked for Judge Richard Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He previously worked as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis and as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Northern District of California.
