Crypto.com Capital, the venture arm of cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com, has hired former TechCrunch reporter Jason Russell as a general partner.
Russell will help expand the fund’s exposure to Asia-based projects. He previously reported on cryptocurrency and blockchain for TechCrunch and The Ken while based in Bangkok.
“We are excited to welcome Jason to the Crypto.com Capital team,” said Bobby Bao, co-founder and CEO of Crypto.com. “He brings a wealth of experience in the crypto and blockchain space, and we believe he will be a valuable asset to our team as we continue to grow our presence in Asia.”
Crypto.com Capital has previously invested in projects such as Frax Finance and liquidity provider Woo Network.
The move comes as Asia’s institutional investors continue to show a strong appetite for digital assets. In December, Singapore’s DBS Bank, one of the region’s largest, launched a crypto trading desk. Thailand’s Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) also recently acquired a majority stake in Thai cryptocurrency exchange Bitkub.
“Despite the current bear market, we are still seeing strong demand from institutional investors for exposure to the crypto and blockchain ecosystem,” said Russell. “We are committed to providing them with the resources and support they need to succeed.”
Crypto.com Capital’s new fund is expected to be more than double the size of its previous fund, which was launched in 2018.
