Congressman Tom Emmer (R-MN) reiterated his support for the blockchain industry at the Consensus 2019 conference in New York City on Tuesday, saying that the U.S. government needs to do more to promote the development of the technology.
“We need to get government in line with the way that the private sector is moving,” Emmer said during a panel discussion on the future of blockchain regulation. “The blockchain industry can generate new opportunities and innovations, and we need to make sure that we’re not standing in the way of that.”
Emmer is a co-chair of the Congressional Blockchain Caucus, which he formed in 2017 with Reps. David Schweikert (R-AZ) and Darren Soto (D-FL). The caucus has been working to promote the understanding of blockchain technology among lawmakers and regulators.
Emmer has also introduced several pieces of legislation that would provide regulatory certainty for the blockchain industry. One bill would exempt cryptocurrency miners from being classified as money transmitters, while another would create a safe harbor for taxpayers who receive forked assets.
“We have a lot of work to do, but we’re making progress,” Emmer said. “We need to continue to educate our colleagues about the benefits of blockchain technology and make sure that they’re aware of the need for regulatory certainty.”
Boring, the president and founder of the Chamber of Digital Commerce, agreed that the U.S. government needs to do more to support the blockchain industry. She noted that other countries, such as the European Union and China, are investing heavily in blockchain research and development.
“The U.S. is falling behind,” Boring said. “We need to make sure that we’re not missing out on this opportunity.”
Forman, the deputy general counsel for Fidelity Investments, echoed Boring’s comments, saying that the blockchain industry needs to make its voice heard in Washington, D.C.
“Talk to your regulators,” Forman said. “We need your story.”
