**Qiwi to fully adopt blockchain by 2021**
Russian payments company Qiwi plans to fully adopt blockchain technology by 2021, the company's CTO Alexey Arkhipov has said.
Qiwi announced a pilot blockchain project in May, saying it would use the technology to increase the transparency, accountability and efficiency of its services.
Arkhipov told Russian news outlet RBC that the company would need to transition its older, centralized database out of use before it could fully adopt blockchain, but that the two systems could operate side by side for up to a year to avoid any issues.
He said: "A full transition to this technology, we could implement maximum by 2021."
Qiwi is one of a number of Russian companies that have been exploring the use of blockchain technology. In June, state-owned oil company Rosneft announced a partnership with blockchain platform Waves to develop a blockchain-based trading platform.
