ASIC Commissioner Cathie Armour recently told the Australian Financial Review Cryptocurrency Summit that the CBA would need to "follow a bunch of rules" if it wanted to launch a cryptocurrency exchange.
"There are a range of rules that apply to financial services, including those that relate to custody," Armour said. "If you're going to be providing a cryptocurrency exchange, you need to be aware of those rules and comply with them."
The CBA's plans to offer cryptocurrency services were first announced in November last year. The bank said it would partner with cryptocurrency exchange Gemini and intelligence firm Chainalysis to offer a crypto exchange and custody service to its customers.
Customers would have access to 10 digital assets, including Bitcoin and Ether.
Australia is the world's third-largest adopter of cryptocurrency, according to a survey conducted in October.
The CBA and ASIC were not immediately available for comment.
