Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, has received in-principle approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to operate in the city-state.

Coinbase is one of more than 10 cryptocurrency companies that have received MAS licenses, including Paxos, Crypto.com, and DBS Vickers. The licensed companies must comply with MAS's anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CTF) requirements.
In contrast to Coinbase's move, Binance, its rival, decided to withdraw from the Singapore market in December 2021. Binance had previously complained about the difficulty and complexity of the MAS licensing process.
MAS has said that it will continue to be tough on the cryptocurrency industry, but Paxos said that the MAS license only allows companies to operate in Singapore, and they still need to be approved by regulators and pass stringent tests.
Coinbase sees Singapore as a leading global financial center and wants to serve customers, including banks and asset managers, who are increasingly looking to invest directly in digital assets. Coinbase currently has 100 employees in Singapore.
