**FCA warns of the risks of unregulated cryptocurrency trading**
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has warned that unregulated cryptocurrency trading poses a risk to consumers, banks and payment companies that deal with them.
Mark Steward, head of the FCA's enforcement division, said on June 22 that there were a number of companies that were clearly trading in the UK without being registered.
"This is a very real risk and we are very concerned about it," he said.
The FCA has compiled a list of more than 100 cryptocurrency companies that appear to be operating in the UK, so that investors can check whether the company they plan to trade with is compliant.
The agency appears to be wary of the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies in the UK. According to a recent FCA survey, 2.3 million adults in the UK now hold cryptocurrencies.
Steward likened the development of cryptocurrencies to the Dutch tulip mania of the 1630s, warning that the fear of missing out (FOMO) is driving many people to invest in high-risk assets.
The FCA has taken a cautious approach to cryptocurrencies, with the government watchdog banning cryptocurrency derivatives platforms in January.
All cryptoasset firms based in the UK must comply with AML regulations and register with the FCA.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a backlog in the processing of applications, and the FCA announced on June 3 that it was extending the temporary registration deadline for firms that applied between July 2021 and March 2022.
Companies that do not resolve their applications by the new deadline are likely to face the same fate as Bybit, which was forced to stop trading in the UK in March this year.
