**France to regulate security token offerings, says AMF chief**
France is set to regulate security token offerings (STOs), with the country’s financial markets regulator (AMF) planning to publish a framework for the issuance of digital tokens backed by real assets.
In an interview with Challenges business magazine last week, AMF chief Robert Ophele said the regulator was working on a regulatory framework for STOs, noting the growing popularity of the technology.
“We want to quickly take a position on this matter,” Ophele said.
While it is not yet known when the AMF will publish its framework, the development makes France the latest country to confirm that it will regulate STOs.
Other countries, including Canada, have taken a more neutral approach to the emerging field, while in Asia, China and most recently South Korea have banned the issuance of cryptocurrency tokens.
Ophele struck a relatively cautious tone when asked about the AMF’s stance on the cryptocurrency sector, saying that the technology presented both opportunities and challenges.
“Cryptocurrencies can be the new ‘home’ for all the criminal activities we want to prevent, such as tax evasion, money laundering and the financing of terrorism,” he said.
“However, they also meet the legal requirements for a fast and low-cost method of transferring money globally.”
Ophele’s comments come as the AMF is set to publish its annual report on the cryptocurrency sector, which is expected to provide an update on the regulator’s activities in the space.
