CME Group, the world's largest derivatives exchange, reported record volume in its bitcoin and ether futures and options in the first quarter of 2022.
The company said that its bitcoin and ether futures and options had a daily average volume of more than $3 billion in the first quarter, up from $1.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021.
CME Group's bitcoin futures and options are cash-settled and based on the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate (BRR), which is the industry standard for pricing bitcoin. The company also offers micro bitcoin futures, which are one-tenth the size of a standard bitcoin futures contract.
"Against a backdrop of heightened market volatility in the digital-asset sector, we continue to see clients turn to a trusted, regulated venue like CME Group for reliable and efficient cryptocurrency risk-management products," said Giovanni Vicioso, global head of cryptocurrency products at CME Group.
CME Group's bitcoin and ether futures and options are available to trade on the CME Globex electronic trading platform.
