Former Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Christopher Giancarlo has joined the board of directors of Digital Asset, a blockchain technology company.
Giancarlo, who is known as “Crypto Dad” by many in the cryptocurrency industry for his crypto-friendly stance as a regulator, has held a number of positions in the crypto industry since leaving the CFTC in 2019.
Earlier this month, Giancarlo joined crypto venture capital firm CoinFund as a policy adviser. He is currently senior counsel at the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, and co-founded the Digital Dollar Project in January 2020.
In a statement, Giancarlo said he was excited to join Digital Asset's board of directors and help the company “build a leading global blockchain technology company.”
“I’ve had a 38-year career, only five of which were spent as a regulator,” Giancarlo said. “I think my value proposition with the companies I work with is much broader than just regulation.”
Digital Asset Chief Financial Officer Emnet Rios said that Giancarlo “fills a gap with a specific focus on distributed ledger technology and asset tokenization, and with his legal and regulatory background, he was a natural fit to join our board.”
Giancarlo’s appointment to Digital Asset’s board of directors comes at a time when the company is looking to expand its business. In January, the company announced a $100 million Series C funding round led by Goldman Sachs.
Digital Asset is one of a number of blockchain technology companies that have seen an influx of investment in recent months. The total amount of venture capital funding raised by blockchain companies in 2020 was more than $2 billion, according to a report by CB Insights.
