New York, NY – April 20, 2015 – Former Bitcoin exchange operator Charlie Shrem will speak at the upcoming screening of “The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin,” a new documentary about the history of the digital currency. The film will be shown at the SVA Theater on Manhattan’s West 23rd Street on Wednesday, April 23rd at 5:30 p.m.
Shrem was arrested in January on charges of money laundering. He has pleaded not guilty and is currently under house arrest.
In 2013, Shrem founded BitInstant, an early Bitcoin exchange that raised $1.5 million in seed funding from Winklevoss Capital. Bitinstant ceased online operations two months later.
Shrem is accused of facilitating purchases on the now-defunct Silk Road marketplace by advising customers on how to exchange currency for Bitcoins. He has been charged with violating federal money laundering laws.
“The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin” follows Bitcoin’s progress over its short history, and features interviews with various Bitcoin personalities from the period, including Mt. Gox’s Mark Karpeles.
The film’s director, Nicholas Mross, is a programmer and filmmaker who has been involved with Bitcoin since 2011. He is also the founder of the Bitcoin documentary project “Bitcoinumentary.”
