Sberbank, a major Russian state-owned bank, is reportedly planning to launch a pilot project for its own "Russian Bitcoin" cryptocurrency. The digital currency will be the "only cryptocurrency that can be freely used for trading activities on the market," according to local news outlet Decenter.
"All other pre-mined cryptocurrencies will only be traded on exchanges or dedicated commercial platforms," the report said.
The news comes as the Central Bank of Russia is reportedly considering its own cryptocurrency, with the country's central bank governor, Elvira Nabiullina, saying in October that the bank is "studying the issue."
Sberbank CEO Herman Gref has also been an outspoken advocate for blockchain technology, saying in 2017 that the bank would be launching its own blockchain-based platform within two years.
