The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and Japanese blockchain startup Soramitsu have announced a joint project to develop a prototype for a central bank digital currency (CBDC) based on distributed ledger technology (DLT).
The goal of the effort is to create a platform that can be used to issue, track, and settle payments in a secure and efficient manner.
“This is a significant step forward for the development of CBDCs,” said Makoto Takemiya, co-CEO of Soramitsu. “The National Bank of Cambodia is one of the most progressive central banks in the world, and we are excited to be working with them to develop a DLT-based payment system that can meet the needs of the Cambodian people.”
The project is expected to last for one year, and the results will be shared with other central banks around the world.
