New York attorney and crypto exchange lawyer Samuel Reed Fowler has been indicted on bank fraud charges, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced Tuesday.
Fowler is accused of using a network of shell companies to launder money through bank accounts in the names of fake people, according to the indictment. Prosecutors allege that Fowler used these accounts to process more than $1 billion in transactions for his clients, including the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex.
Bitfinex lost $850 million in funds in 2016, and the company has alleged that those funds were stolen by Crypto Capital, a Panamanian-based "shadow bank" that Fowler is accused of running.
Fowler has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His trial is scheduled to begin in January 2023.
