Two Japanese Bitcoin payment processors, Coincheck and Bitflyer, have announced that they have secured insurance to cover losses in the event of a hack or other incident.
Coincheck has partnered with Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance to provide a policy that covers up to ¥100 million ($880,000) in damages. Bitflyer has secured a policy from Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance that covers up to ¥1 billion ($8.8 million).
The insurance policies are designed to give businesses and retailers more confidence in accepting Bitcoin as a payment method. In April, Japan's Financial Services Agency recognized Bitcoin as a legal payment method, and a number of businesses have since begun to accept it.
Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance also offers an insurance product for Bitcoin transactions that covers damage caused by incidents or cyber attacks. According to a report by the Japan Cryptocurrency Business Association (JCBA) in November, insurance companies could suffer losses of up to ¥1 billion ($8.8 million) from Bitcoin-related incidents.
The increased adoption of Bitcoin in Japan is reflected in the number of Bitcoin exchanges that have been licensed by the Financial Services Agency. In March, the FSA granted 18 licenses to operate Bitcoin exchanges, 10 of which were awarded to new businesses involved in the Bitcoin industry.
Midori Kanemitsu, Bitflyer's financial manager, said that he expects the number of Bitcoin-accepting retailers in Japan to reach 300,000 by the end of the year.
