**Zimbabwe Finance Minister: Cryptocurrencies can solve cash shortage problem**
Zimbabwe's Finance Minister, Mthuli Ncube, believes that cryptocurrencies can help the country solve its cash shortage problem.
Ncube said that he would like to convince the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) to set up a cryptocurrency unit, which would help banks in the country move towards digitalization.
He pointed to Switzerland as an example, where the central bank has supported the development of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
“If advanced countries like Switzerland are finding the value from cryptocurrencies and know where it is going, we should follow them,” Ncube said.
“We have a creative young generation so we should not be indifferent to this trend. Instead, lawmakers need to invest in catching up with the trend and seeking to understand that technology.”
Zimbabwe has been experiencing a cash shortage for the past two years, with banks imposing limits on withdrawals. The shortage has been exacerbated by the fact that people are holding onto their money instead of spending it due to the country’s economic crisis.
If Ncube is successful in convincing the RBZ to set up a cryptocurrency unit, it would be a major U-turn for the central bank, which has previously been very vocal in its opposition to cryptocurrencies.
In May, the RBZ issued a circular banning banks from dealing with cryptocurrencies, citing risks related to money laundering and other illegal activities.
“Furthermore, cryptocurrencies can be used in tax evasion as well as activities that are contrary to the State’s regulations,” the circular said.
Although the Supreme Court in Zimbabwe has since overturned the ban, the ambiguity of the law has caused some exchanges such as Golix to move their operations to other African countries in order to avoid excessive reliance on the Zimbabwean market.
