The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) is developing an open-source platform to help combat counterfeiting. The platform will allow each link in the trade supply chain to track products and verify their authenticity.
Using distributed ledger technology (DLT), the platform will create a tamper-proof record of product information that can be shared across the supply chain. This will help to prevent counterfeiters from creating fake products that appear to be authentic.
The EUIPO says that counterfeits amount to 2.5% of global trade, worth around EUR 412 billion ($451 billion). The platform is expected to be launched later this year.
