**Bitfinex Pre-pays $100M Loan to Tether**
On Tuesday, cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex announced that it had pre-paid a $100 million loan to Tether. The loan, which was originally due in December 2019, was made in fiat and wired to Tether's bank account.
Bitfinex and Tether have long shared key executives and shareholders, though both companies maintain that they are separate entities. Tether's USDT token, which usually trades around $1, is supposed to be backed 1-to-1 with U.S. dollars or cash equivalents. However, the Bitfinex loan mentioned that a portion of that collateral was replaced with the debt of an affiliated company.
This is not the first time that Bitfinex and Tether have been in the news. In February, the New York Attorney General's (NYAG) office filed a lawsuit against Bitfinex and Tether, alleging that the companies had covered up a $850 million loss. Bitfinex has since filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, claiming that the NYAG has neither
The NYAG's office has until July 8 to file its opposition, and Bitfinex and its affiliated companies will be able to file their own response by July 22. Attorneys for both sides are due back in court on July 29.
