Abra, a San Francisco-based startup that allows users to send money internationally using Bitcoin, has secured $10 million in Series A funding. The round was led byRRE Ventures, with participation from Pantera Capital, Ribbit Capital, and others.
With the new funding, Abra plans to further develop the functionality of its remittance app as well as support efforts to expand the reach of its service.
“Abra is fully leveraging the potential of the technology by reducing friction in financial services,” said Jim Robinson, general partner at RRE Ventures and a co-founder of Abra. “It’s not about Bitcoin for the sake of Bitcoin – it’s about how the technology can solve problems for consumers worldwide, even if they don’t know what the blockchain is.”
Abra uses Bitcoin as its backend infrastructure, but denominates funds that pass through its system in US dollars. The company says that this allows it to offer a more seamless user experience than traditional remittance services, which often require users to convert their funds into multiple currencies before sending them.
“We believe that Abra has the potential to revolutionize the way people send money around the world,” said Malte Jorgensen, partner at Pantera Capital. “The company’s team has deep experience in the financial services industry and a proven track record of success. We are excited to partner with them on this journey.”
Abra was founded in 2014 by Robinson, Bill Barhydt, and Josh Connell. The company came out of stealth mode earlier this year at the end of Launch Festival 2015.
