The volume of Bitcoin options trading surged to a record high on Monday as the price of the cryptocurrency fell sharply.
Deribit, the world's largest crypto options exchange by volume, traded nearly $170 million worth of options on Monday, according to data from Skew. This represents a 10-fold increase from the daily average of $17 million in January.
The surge in options trading activity came as Bitcoin (BTC) price dropped from $9,900 to $7,640 in a single day. The sell-off was likely triggered by liquidations of leveraged positions by alleged PlusToken scammers.
“The sell-off has provided an ample amount of opportunities for both shorter-term traders and longer-term investors alike to acquire Bitcoin and other assets at a significant discount to where prices stood just two weeks ago,” said Emmanuel Goh, CEO and co-founder of Skew. “Options are one effective way of taking advantage of these opportunities.”
The increase in options trading volume is a sign of increased institutional participation in the Bitcoin market. In January, Su Zhu, CEO of Three Arrows Capital, tweeted that he had seen “an explosion of interest from investors, intraday traders, and miners in BTC options on Deribit.”
As Bitcoin’s price drops, the open interest – the sum of all options contracts that have not expired, been exercised, or physically delivered – has risen to $841 million. This represents a 200% increase from the open interest of $250 million in early January.
The increase in open interest suggests that investors are expecting further volatility in the Bitcoin market. With the May 2020 reward halving, the coronavirus pandemic, and the prospects of an all-out oil price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia, there is plenty of uncertainty to keep the Bitcoin market volatile in the coming months.
