**Bitcoin miner Bitfarms Ltd (BITF) on Wednesday reported a wider loss for the fourth quarter, as the price of bitcoin slumped to as low as $16,000 and mining difficulty increased.**
The Toronto-based company said it lost $10.3 million in the fourth quarter, compared with a loss of $4.5 million a year earlier. Revenue fell 15% to $27 million.
Bitfarms said its bitcoin production fell to 961 bitcoin in the fourth quarter, from 1,218 bitcoin in the same period a year earlier. The company said it had 4.5 exahash/second (EH/s) of computing power by year-end, down from 7.2 EH/s in the third quarter.
"The fourth quarter was rough for many miners, with the price of bitcoin slumping to as low as $16,000 and mining difficulty increasing," said President and CEO Geoff Morphy in a statement. "Looking ahead, we plan to leverage our existing infrastructure in Argentina and utilize equipment credits to prudently expand our EH/s to 6.0 with our existing assets by year end 2023."
Bitfarms has been trying to lower its debt obligations during the bear market, as are other miners including Stronghold Digital Mining (SDIG) and Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA). In February, bankrupt lender BlockFi took a two-thirds loss to settle $21 million of outstanding debt with Bitfarms. That helped Bitarms cut debt obligations by 86% compared to June 2022.
