In an email to customers, Cointrader said that the issue is currently under investigation and that it intends to settle customer account balances as soon as possible.
The closure follows months of low trading volume on the platform. According to data from Bitcoin Charts, Cointrader has seen just 81.43 BTC (about $33,600) in trading volume over the past six months.
This is not the first time that Cointrader has run into trouble. In early 2014, the exchange's customer and corporate bank accounts were shut down by the Bank of Montreal, its former banking partner. At the time, the move was blamed on a restrictive policy toward digital currency businesses on the part of the Canadian government.
Cointrader and its parent company, Newnote Financial, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
