**Bitcoin ETF Withdrawal Suggests SEC Unwilling to Approve Crypto Products Without Underlying Derivatives**
The Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) has withdrawn its application for a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), citing a lack of available Bitcoin futures contracts.
In a letter to the SEC, Grayscale President J. Garrett Stevens wrote that the SEC staff had expressed the view that it is the commission's policy not to review a registration statement for a fund where the underlying instruments in which the fund intends to primarily invest are not yet available.
"Staff requested that the Trust withdraw Amendment No. 47 until such time as the underlying instruments in which the Funds intend to invest (i.e., Bitcoin futures contracts) become available for investment," Stevens wrote.
The SEC has yet to approve any Bitcoin ETFs, and has rejected several applications in the past. The agency has said that it is still considering the Winklevoss twins' Bitcoin ETF proposal, which is currently under review.
