On December 7, Binance Asia Services officially announced the acquisition of a 18% stake in HGX, a licensed and regulated securities trading platform by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
Binance Asia Services CEO Richard Teng said the new investment will help Binance and HGX expand the scale of products and services supported by blockchain technology in Singapore.
“Cryptocurrencies and traditional financial services continue to converge and grow in tandem. We look forward to collaborating with HGX to advance the blockchain ecosystem in this country,” said Teng.
HGX is a private securities trading platform based on a community, established by financial institutions such as PhillipCapital asset management company, local financial services group PrimePartners, and Fundnel, a technology platform for private investments in Southeast Asia. The trading platform reportedly uses the Zilliqa blockchain.
The new investment comes after Binance encountered some issues in Singapore. At the end of September, Binance was forced to block transactions and fiat deposits for users in Singapore. Before that, the exchange also limited the provision of cryptocurrency services to the Lion City as regulators accused the company of potentially violating payment laws.
However, with its recent move to “regain” the UK market, Binance is unlikely to give up on the Singapore market anytime soon, especially as most users still trust the exchange despite the recent regulatory troubles. This is especially true given that Binance’s main competitor Huobi has chosen Singapore as its headquarters in Asia.
