Two Bored Ape Yacht Club investors have filed a class-action lawsuit against Yuga Labs, the company behind the popular NFT collection, and a number of celebrities who promoted the NFTs, alleging that they were misled about the value of the NFTs.
The lawsuit, filed in California federal court, alleges that Yuga Labs and the celebrities engaged in a "pump-and-dump" scheme to artificially inflate the price of the NFTs. The plaintiffs, who purchased a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT and an Otherdeed for Otherside NFT, claim that they lost money when the value of the NFTs crashed.
The lawsuit names 37 defendants, including Yuga Labs co-founders Yug Garg and Gordon Goner, as well as celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Jimmy Fallon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Madonna.
The plaintiffs allege that the celebrities were paid to promote the NFTs without disclosing that they were being paid. They also allege that the celebrities made false and misleading statements about the value of the NFTs.
The lawsuit seeks damages for the plaintiffs' losses, as well as an injunction to stop Yuga Labs and the celebrities from further promoting NFTs.
In a statement, Yuga Labs called the lawsuit "opportunistic and parasitic." The company said that it "strongly believes that the claims are without merit and look forward to vigorously defending the case."
