Digital Currency Group (DCG) is exploring a number of options to address the liquidity crisis of its flagship Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), according to a new report from Bernstein.
One option that DCG is considering is a "nuclear option" of dissolving GBTC, the report said. This would involve DCG applying for reg M relief and exchanging GBTC's Bitcoin (BTC) holdings for GBTC shares. This would leave GBTC holders with Bitcoin instead of shares, which would minimize the market impact.
However, it is unclear if GBTC holders would want to own the Bitcoin itself, as many bought the fund to avoid the hassles of cryptocurrency custody, the report added.
Another option that DCG is considering is raising capital through a combination of debt and equity. However, this may prove difficult as valuations have dropped significantly in the private market since DCG's last fundraising in November 2021.
DCG could also sell non-core assets, such as Cindesk, Luno, Foundry, or other venture assets. However, it is not clear if this would close the balance sheet gap or happen quickly enough.
