**8 banks form blockchain trade finance consortium**
A consortium of eight banks has formed a new blockchain-based trade finance platform, which it says will be commercially available in the second quarter of 2018.
The platform, which was originally known as Digital Trade Chain, has been rebranded as "we.trade" and will be jointly owned by the founding banks – Banco Santander, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, KBC, Natixis, Rabobank, Societe Generale and UniCredit – as well as IBM.
In a statement, the consortium said that the platform will be used to "digitize and automate trade transactions," and that it will "reduce costs, increase transparency and improve security."
The banks said that they will be working with other companies in the trade process, including in shipping, to further develop the platform.
