**Sydney woman arrested for allegedly laundering $5 million in cryptocurrency**
A Sydney woman has been arrested for allegedly laundering more than $5 million in cryptocurrency, in what police say is the first arrest of its kind in Australia.
The 50-year-old woman was arrested at a home in Sydney's inner west on Tuesday, and charged with three counts of knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime.
Police allege the woman was involved in a cryptocurrency money-laundering syndicate, and that she transacted Bitcoin valued at more than AU $5 million (US $3.22 million) since 2017.
The arrest was made by the NSW Police Force's cybercrime unit, Strike Force Kerriwah, which was set up in late 2018 to investigate online money-laundering operations in the state.
Investigators seized cryptocurrency wallets with a further AU $18,200 (US $11,749) in Bitcoin, along with digital storage devices, computers and mobile phones, during a search of a residential property in Sydney.
The woman is due to appear in court on Wednesday.
The investigation was conducted in collaboration with Austrac (Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre) and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC).
