As the DeFi summer comes to an end, so has the surge in activity on the Ethereum blockchain. This has led to a decrease in transaction fees, which had been at record highs due to the high demand for DeFi applications.
On Uniswap, the biggest decentralized exchange (DEX), daily trading volumes have crashed to $224 million, versus a record high of $954 million on September 1st.
"Low volatility in the crypto market as a whole has contributed to lower trading volumes across the board," said Paolo Ardoino, CTO of Bitfinex. "This has led to a decrease in demand for DeFi products, which in turn has reduced the amount of activity on the Ethereum blockchain."
The decrease in activity has also led to a decrease in transaction fees. The average cost of executing a transaction on Ethereum's blockchain has dropped to just above $2, from a record $14.58 on September 2nd.
This is good news for Ethereum users, who had been paying exorbitant fees to use the network. However, it is important to note that the relief could be temporary. If DeFi activity picks up again, or if the price of ether rises, transaction fees could quickly shoot back up.
