In a blog post, ProtonMail said that the "general increase in the number of bitcoin transactions over the years has made the [manual] approach unfeasible and made development of an automated system necessary." The company also cited the "fragmentation and uncertainty of the traditional financial sector" as a reason for its decision to diversify into cryptocurrencies.
ProtonMail is limiting its crypto payment options to bitcoin for now, but it says that it will look to the community for input on which other coins or tokens it should accept in the future. The company is soliciting suggestions via social media.
"We're excited to further deepen our connections with the cryptocurrency community with this step, and we look forward to doing our part to ensure that the bright future of email remains secure," ProtonMail said.
