The study, by Spain's financial regulator CNMV, found that 40% of crypto investors believe that cryptocurrencies are regulated by law, while 29% think they have the same risk as other investments.
The regulator said it was "concerning" that so many investors were unaware of the risks involved in crypto investing.
"It is worrying that 40% [of crypto investors] consider cryptocurrencies to be regulated by law, and that 29% think they have the same risk as other investments," the CNMV said in a statement.
The study also found that over half of the population (55%) think the warnings on crypto ads are easy to read and large enough.
The CNMV said it would continue to monitor the crypto market and take action to protect investors.
