Oaks allegedly accessed the cell phone numbers of more than 300 people and transferred them to other phones in his possession, bypassing two-factor authentication measures on their online accounts.
He then used the stolen cryptocurrency to purchase gift cards and other items, prosecutors said.
Oaks worked alongside others in the U.S. and Canada to access more than 60 smartphones and hundreds of SIM cards, according to Vance.
“Sim-swapping has only grown more common and prolific since the first prosecution by New York authorities two years ago,” Vance said in a statement. “This case should serve as a warning to cryptocurrency investors that they must take steps to protect their accounts.”
Oaks faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
